The fingers and thumb have different topologies than those seen in DNA polymerase I. The fingers are made mainly of two antiparallel alpha helices; but the palm is topologically similar to the one in DNA polymerase I. The only difference is that gp43 has one of the three carboxylates (the amino acids that bind the incoming nucleotide) on a different beta strand. The overall structure of gp43 with the polymerase domain and the N-terminus domain, which contains the exonuclease domain, has a disk structure with a hole in the middle.
