Some writers have been keen to assert the importance of commercialization and class formation in the Cape economy from the late eighteenth century, and to emphasize that neither eighteenth-century pastoralists at the Cape, nor later trekboers in the interior should be seen as purely selfsufficient, isolated, subsistence farmers. There is no doubt that frontier families did produce for the local market, if only to obtain the various commodities – from sugar and coffee to guns and ammunition – that were important to them.

In the two following years they were reinforced by some 2,300 agricultural labourers, also from Germany. Other changes affecting the labour supply for the colony, including the abolition of slavery in 1834, will be discussed in the following chapter. Perhaps the main gain to the economic life of the colony from its absorption into the British Empire was the stimulus given to wine farms. Under the system of imperial preference operated by the United Kingdom, Cape wines were allowed to enter on payment of duties appreciably below those charged on wines from France and other foreign countries.
